St Aidan's Community School

TY.

On completion of the Junior Cycle programme students have the choice of going into the Transition Year programme. We have enrolled our first full class this year for the first time in 25 years!

Transition year is a one-year programme that prepares students to approach the senior cycle with a greater degree of confidence and maturity.

A two-week work experience placement is a big part of the programme. Students also go on a weekly educational outing on Tuesdays and in addition to core subjects such as English, Irish, Maths, a Modern Language, etc, students also enjoy Science, IT, PE and Career Guidance and can choose from a wide range of modular courses such as Hair & Beauty, Legal Studies, Classical Studies, Art/Fashion, Life Skills and Music.

The wide range of experience that students gain in Transition Year helps them to make informed decisions about subject choices for their two year senior cycle course.

We also coordinate the programme in line with the Transition Year statement (2024)

We aim to:

“Nurture the development of the student as a whole person by building on their previous experiences, through a curriculum designed by the school that is aligned to the TY Programme Statement create space and opportunities for meaningful, enjoyable learning experiences through which the key competencies of the student can be developed in the classroom and school, in the home and in their role as local, national and global citizens expand the student’s experience and awareness of diverse future pathways and nurture the student’s capacity to sustain their growth and development through a process of lifelong learning evolve continuously to support the learning and development of the student through a reflection and renewal process involving students, teachers, school leaders, parents and community partners” (2024)
